Jarman Curriculum

Art, music and physical education are valuable aspects of education at Jarman.

Students attend these classes on a three day rotation schedule. The music class at Jarman is a part of the Orff instrument program, and our students are given opportunities to try out a variety of instruments in music class.

Jarman Elementary has incorporated the Character Counts! program into its educational curriculum in an effort to encourage the development of moral character in students.

The Character Counts! program is based on six core character values. A new character trait is introduced each month.

The Character Counts! traits are Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Trustworthiness, Fairness and Citizenship.

Each month, students who consistently demonstrate these core values are acknowledged.

Jarman offers an English Learner curriculum to those students for whom English is not a primary language. Students participate in small group instruction that focuses on the English language.

The Extended Day Program (EDP) provides safe, alternative educational child care, enhancing the child’s extended day. Recognizing the busy lifestyles of today’s family, the district attempts to work in partnership with home and parents by providing before and after school supervision at the school site.

Jarman students also participate in a Student Council.  

Union’s literacy framework includes reading, writing, and phonics/word study components of instruction.

Students are challenged to become strong readers, writers, and thinkers as they encounter a variety of literacy experiences. Teachers model the use of reading and writing strategies using authentic literature during whole group instruction. Students’ reading comprehension and writing proficiency improve as they use these strategies in their independent reading and writing times. As students spend time reading and writing, teachers meet with small groups and individual students to provide support, teach strategies, and assess progress in reading and writing.

In phonics/word study, students learn to spell by practicing word patterns, word families, and word meaning on their appropriate spelling level. Spelling levels are determined by individual spelling assessments. 

My Math is a resource utilized in grade levels K-5. Additionally, Jarman teachers collaborate to plan and implement math units designed around essential standards and concept development. 

A full-time media specialist works hard to ensure students are able to access grade level books of interest. Classroom teachers and the media specialist collaborate to conduct classroom research projects, host author visits, and teach library and resource skills. Students are also able to participate in book clubs encouraging the love of reading.

Jarman provides a number of different technology resources for students. Students are given a laptop or iPad to access online learning resources that enhance their educational experience. Every classroom is outfitted with a Smartboard/Interactive Panel to facilitate learning in the classroom.

Jarman has an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) that works closely with school administration and teachers to promote a positive school experience for all students. Some of the highlights of the school year are the Family Fun Night, Book Fair, Bingo Night, and Jog-A-Thon. Jarman families and staff come together to enjoy fun events while working to raise funds for classroom materials and projects.  

There are many ways that parents and family members can volunteer and support students at Jarman. Opportunities may include sharing your talents, attending PTA events, assisting with Freckles Fridays, Reflections, Test Monitoring, Classroom Projects, Book Fair, Jog-a-Thon, Family Fun Night, and more! We love our volunteers!

Nystrom is a resource utilized in grade levels Pre-K – 5th. Students are challenged to think about the world around them in ways that make them excited to learn.

Students are actively engaged in their Social Studies learning as they participate in hands-on activities, technology infused lessons, and multi-faceted learning experiences that lead to step-by-step discovery.

Students don't just learn Social Studies - they experience it.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) at Union Public Schools is an interdisciplinary approach to learning that encourages students to inquire, explore, and problem solve. 

Project Lead The Way is the nation’s leading provider of STEM education. Studies show that students decide as early as second and third grade whether they like, and think they are good at, math and science. PLTW’s elementary program is designed for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. Through a series of topic-based modules, students will engage in design problems that encourage collaboration, analysis, problem solving, and computational thinking.

TWIG is a resource utilized in grade levels K-5th.
