Jarman Profile

Wesley V. Jarman Elementary opened its doors on August 21, 1991 to approximately 650 students in grades kindergarten-sixth.  The school was built to relieve crowding at both Darnaby and Andersen Elementary. 

Jarman Elementary is named after former superintendent, Dr. Wesley Jarman, who served Union Public Schools from 1975 until his retirement in 1990. 

Jarman Elementary holds full accreditation status from the State Department of Education in Oklahoma.

25th Anniversary

On May 15, 2017, Jarman celebrated its 25th anniversary. 

“Live up to your potential and seek out your dreams, and always remember that you came from Jarman Elementary School,” retired Jarman Principal, Patti Pitcock, advised students during the anniversary celebration. 

Dr. Wesley Jarman, for whom the school is named, said he continues to admire the school and continues to follow the school's accomplishments.

The special ceremony also paid tribute to the all the teachers who have worked at Jarman over the years.

Shawna-Thompson

Shawna Thompson-Graham was named principal of Jarman Elementary School in May 2012. She joined Union Public Schools in 2011, first serving as an administrative intern for Roy Clark Elementary School.

In 2003, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Oklahoma. She returned to the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa where she earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration in 2007.

Before coming to Union, she taught 5th and 6th grades for seven years at Jenks Public Schools. During that time, she served on numerous committees, including leadership, curriculum, and research. In 2008 and 2010, she traveled to China, helping to establish a relationship with a sister school in Nanxi and serving as one of the first teachers in an exchange program. Additionally, in 2010-2011, Thompson was named site Teacher of the Year.

In the spring of 2015, she was honored with the University of Oklahoma’s Young Educator Award. She loves being a part of the Jarman community and Union School District and looks forward to serving her school community for many years to come. She and her husband, Antonio, are the proud parents of Tatum, also a Jarman Patriot, and Zachary.

Justin Vannest was named assistant principal for Jarman Elementary in June 2025. he had served as assistant principal for Roy Clark since 2021.

Vannest has been with Union Public Schools since 2010, starting as a teacher for Briarglen Elementary School before moving to the Union 6th/7th Center as a math teacher in 2015 until 2021.

Vannest has a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, and a master’s degree in education administration and curriculum supervision from the University of Oklahoma.
